A short, factual letter is stronger than a long emotional one. Here's the structure that works.
Your hardship letter has one job: connect a specific event to a specific change in your finances, and state exactly what you're asking for. Underwriters read hundreds of these. Clear and short beats heartfelt and vague.

Re: Loan number [loan number] — [property address]
To whom it may concern:
I am writing to request loss mitigation assistance on the loan referenced above. I am submitting a complete application with this letter.
What happened. In [month, year], [describe the event in one or two sentences — for example: I was laid off from my position at (employer) after (number) years; my hours were reduced from 40 to 24 per week; I was hospitalized and unable to work for (number) months; my spouse and co-borrower passed away; my adjustable rate increased].
The financial effect. As a result, my monthly household income went from approximately $[amount] to approximately $[amount], a decrease of about $[amount] per month. [If applicable: my expenses also increased by approximately $[amount] per month because of (medical bills, insurance premium increase, childcare).] I fell behind on my mortgage beginning with the [month, year] payment.
Where I am now. [Choose one and delete the other. Resolved: I began new employment with (employer) on (date) earning approximately $(amount) per month, and I am able to sustain a modified payment going forward. Ongoing: my income remains reduced and I am not able to sustain my current payment of $(amount).]
What I am requesting. I am asking to be reviewed for all loss mitigation options available on my loan, including [loan modification / a payment deferral / forbearance / an FHA partial claim / a repayment plan]. My goal is to [keep my home and bring the loan current / lower my monthly payment to a sustainable amount / sell the property without a foreclosure on my record].
I have enclosed the documentation listed on the attached checklist. Please contact me at [phone] or [email] if anything further is needed, and please send all written correspondence to the address above.
Thank you for your review.
Sincerely,

"In March 2026 my employer of nine years eliminated my position. My household income dropped from approximately $5,400 per month to $2,900 per month in unemployment benefits, a decrease of about $2,500. I fell behind beginning with the May 2026 payment. I started a new role on August 4, 2026 earning approximately $5,100 per month, so my hardship is resolved and I can sustain a modified payment — but I cannot repay the four months of arrears in a lump sum."
That paragraph tells an underwriter the hardship type, the dollar impact, the recovery, and the correct product — all in four sentences.
